A real-time payments dashboard rebuilt for scale

The challenge
The dashboard queried the production transactional database directly. Merchants with high volumes waited 14 seconds for a page, the largest accounts timed out entirely, and analytics load was starting to threaten payment processing itself.
What we did
Separated analytics from transactions
Reporting moved to a column-store replica, so merchant queries can never contend with payment writes again.
Pre-aggregated the common questions
The handful of views that drive most traffic are materialised incrementally rather than recomputed per request.
Rebuilt the frontend around perceived speed
Streaming responses, skeleton states, and route-level code splitting mean something useful is on screen almost immediately.
Load-tested against real shapes
We tested with the transaction distribution of their largest merchant, not synthetic uniform data that hides the actual bottlenecks.
The outcome
Merchant support tickets about the dashboard dropped away, and the analytics workload no longer poses a risk to payment processing.
